The Trends in Biodiversity and Evolution (TiBE) conference is an annual meeting organized by BIOPOLIS-CIBIO providing a platform for senior researchers, as well as post-graduate and graduate students, to present and discuss the latest developments in evolutionary biology and related fields. Topics covered include speciation, molecular evolution, comparative genomics, and population and conservation genetics, among others. Held in an informal yet stimulating atmosphere, the conference fosters learning, exchange and collaboration within the scientific community.
TiBE 2025, organized by BIODESERTS, was devoted to the theme Biodiversity, Evolution, and Conservation in Deserts and Arid Regions and focused on the diverse flora, fauna, and human communities of these ecosystems.
Over two days, participants explored current knowledge on desert biodiversity, the factors shaping biodiversity patterns in arid ecosystems, the impacts of global change, and the actions being developed to ensure the long-term conservation of desert biodiversity. The event brought together leading scientists, researchers, students, and practitioners to discuss recent advancements and foster collaborations aimed at developing innovative solutions for the conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity in deserts and arid regions.
The 14th Sahelo-Sahara Interest Group Annual Meeting was held at CIBIO/UP (Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources, University of Porto), in Vairão, Portugal, from 30 April to 2 May 2014. The event was organized by BIODESERTS in partnership with the Sahara Conservation Fund.
The meeting brought together 65 researchers from 17 countries, spanning Europe, Africa, and North America, and representing 38 scientific institutions. The scientific programme included 46 oral presentations and 6 poster presentations.
This international gathering strengthened collaboration across the Sahelo-Saharan research community and enhanced Portugal’s visibility in key domains of biodiversity science and conservation.
Beyond specialists directly working in the Sahelo-Sahara region, the event also attracted researchers and postgraduate students from the University of Porto, contributing to new research initiatives and postgraduate studies—particularly within the Master’s programme in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution at CIBIO/UP.
